Recently I've run into a number of situations where I've needed a coated material. For example, I had polished resin, lacquered brass, etc.

The issue simply becomes you have two different materials on top of each other and these materials have different glossy parameters.

In this tutorial I show how to deal with this, and how to use a V-Ray blend material to create a coated material.

Boost your 3DS Max and V-Ray skills by learning advanced material layering, realistic shader creation, and photorealistic coating techniques. At Leon51, we create high end 3D visuals and animation, creating architectural visualizations (CGIs), wespecialize in archviz rendering workflows, CGI material setups, etc.

Here's a link to the YouTube tutorial.
